Background

NGC 2477 is a bright (5.8 mag), densely populated open cluster  4,000 light-years away in Puppis. Around 700 million years old, it contains an estimated  2,000 members. The high density gives it the visual character of a loose globular — a delight even at moderate apertures.

My Observing Notes

25-cm (Meade 10-inch LX200, The Coffee Grinder): A particularly enjoyable discovery — densely populated with 100–200 visible stars in a compact circle, resembling a very loose globular cluster.(Friday, April 2025)

30-cm (SkyWatcher 12-inch f/5): Revisited via Southern Gems object 34. With the 35 mm Panoptic this large 25' cluster dominates the FOV with the bright star b Pup marking the bottom of the field.  100–200 stars arranged in waves of chains and arcs — uniform shape and density giving the appearance of a loose globular halo without a core.(Friday, March 2026)
